The true story of an American Art Form Music – The Blues

In the history of music there is probably no single musical style that influenced the “pop” Blues more. The blues is also unique in that it is truly “American” musical art form. As we discover the roots of the musical styles of Jazz, Rock, Gospel and musical artists BB King, Elvis Presley, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin, all were heavily influenced by the blues.

It is important to note that the term “popular music”, as in the past is a bit misleading. Too often we talk about classical music and popular music as well completely different musical expressions. Do not assume that they are not very different. What I mean is that the word “popular” is not for the time we live

Let me explain. If we lived in Europe in 1786, when Mozart was 30 years old and the height of his career (he died at the age of 36) that his music was considered popular, right? If there were no recording studios, radio stations, MP3 and iPods in 1786, would be too naive and simplistic to conclude that one of his symphonies and piano concertos would have been a “Top Ten Version?” And if so, would not be considered “popular music?” I think you’ll agree that this is certainly an unconventional viewpoint, but true.

From the blues had such influence, it is important to understand why. Here is a brief history.

The Blues were born in the North Mississippi Delta following the Civil War. His most sincere and passionate they are deeply rooted in slavery and African-American culture. The first compositions were field hollers, ballads, songs, spiritual church, rhythmic dance called jump-ups that appear a singer that would take place in the call-and-response with his guitar. She sang a line, and guitar to respond. For many years, due to the lack of music education, many songs were recorded and transmitted only by memory. Therefore, it is likely that much of it was a great song “Lost in Translation”.

The Blues became the essence and hope of African-American laborer, whose spirit is married to these songs, reflecting his inner soul to all who will listen. Rhythm and Blues is the cornerstone of all forms of African American music. The Blues, with its 12 bar, 7 dissonant chord progressions and melodies were folded note hymns from an oppressed race, to be bound by their sad cries for freedom and equality. Its origins at the intersection of highways 61 and 49, and the platform of the Clarksdale Railway Station, blues began to grow and eventually north to Beale Street in Memphis.

The term “the blues” refers to “Blue Devils”, ie, the melancholy and sadness. Early use the term in this sense is found in George Colman farce in one act Blue Devils (1798). Although the use of the phrase in African-American music may be older, has been certified since 1912, when Hart Wand “Dallas Blues” became the first blues composition copyright.

How blues for the first time joined by composer WC Handy Black 1911-1914 (1873-1958). However, the poetic and musical form of the blues first crystallized in 1910 and gained popularity with the release of “Memphis Blues” Handy (1912) and “St. Louis Blues” (1914). The blues instrumentals were recorded in 1913. During the twenties, the blues became a national craze.

Mamie Smith recorded the song and Blues ‘Loco’ blues lyric in 1920. The influence of jazz blues gave the general public and made possible the records of blues singers like Bessie Smith and, later, in the thirties, Billie Holiday.

In northern cities like Chicago and Detroit, during the forties and fifty years later, initially, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Howlin ‘Wolf, and Elmore James among others, played what was basically Mississippi Delta Blues, backed by bass, drums, piano and occasionally harmonica, and began scoring national hits with blues songs. About the same time, T-Bone Walker in Houston and BB King in Memphis were pioneering a style of jazz guitar playing technique with the blue hue and repertoire. It is also important to mention that the roots of Jazz began with the Blues. So if there would be no jazz blues!

In the sixties, the urban bluesmen were “discovered” by young white American and European musicians. Many of these bands, like blue based Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, cream, Led Zeppelin, Canned Heat, and Fleetwood Mac, blues to young white audiences, what black blues artists was unable to do in America except through the white cross stolen covers black rhythm and blues. Since the sixties, rock has undergone several blues. Some rock guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen have used the blues as a basis for branch styles. While authors such as John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and BB King – and their heirs Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Eric Clapton and later and the late Roy Buchanan, among many others, have followed fantastic music in the blues tradition. The latest generation of bluesmen Robert Cray and Stevie Ray would later.

Today, there are many shades of blue. The following ways:

Traditional county blues – A general term describing the rural blues of the Mississippi Delta, Piedmont and other rural communities.

Jump blues – An amalgam dance swing and blues and R & B precursor Jump blues was developed by Louis Jordan.

Boogie Woogie – a piano-based blues popularized by Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson, and barrelhouse and ragtime derivative.

Chicago blues – Delta Blues electrified.

Cool Blues – A sophisticated form-based piano that owes much to jazz.

The affection of the public for the Blues seems to be increasing. In Dana Point, California, the town nearest the mine, Doheny Beach has an annual blues festival that continues to grow. Others can be found in Portland, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and the list goes on.

As for me, personally, Blues has always been an integral part of my life. When I play the guitar and sing with other musicians, which is the easiest and most popular music nice “jamb” with. When I was a kid, my parents had a music store and rock club called The Four Muses in San Clemente, California, from 1965 to 1975, we have always been groups Blues scene. Most notable was the famous blues duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

My only personal problem with listening to a lot of blues is that it can get quite repetitive and not “cool” sounds by the use of standard 12 Bar Blues Chord Progression. That said, I recommend that everyone strive to listen to some live blues this summer. The music and the crowd that normally attracts ensure a pleasant experience.
